MILWAUKEE - Playing a Blue vs Gold game instead of an exhibition contest against Northern Illinois, the Marquette men's soccer team took on itself at Valley Fields with the Gold Team winning, 2-0. Sophomore Tom Lynn scored both marks for the gold as the two teams played in what was a driving rain storm for most of the game.
Lynn scored in the 14th minute finishing a distribution from sophomore Billy Von Rueden. Lynn struck again taking creating his own opportunity in the 65th minute when he struck a left footer from 10 yards after moving back to the center from a run down the right wing.
"Tom Lynn looked really good today," head coach Louis Bennett said. "He looked about as good as he has in a Marquette University."
The Gold Team was comprised mostly of what would be starters if the season began today. They did receive a good test from the Blue Team, but the Gold controlled most of the chances.
"Both teams were able to run well, but the Gold created the more familiar chances," Bennett said. "But it was nice to see most everyone close to being fit and to see them go."
Freshman Steve Purdy played 90 scoreless minutes in goal, shutting down offensive weapons like Michael Greene, who was playing up front for the Blue. He also went 30 scoreless minutes in the exhibition game against Northwestern. Purdy started for the Gold Team for Matt Pyzdrowski who suffered a concussion against Northwestern.
"It's very encouraging to have Purdy not give up a goal while Matt Pyzdrowski is out with injury," Bennett added. "It gives us added confidence in goal."
Marquette next meets Northern Illinois on Sunday, August 26 at 1 p.m. at Valley Fields. It is MU's final exhibition test. Bennett said he would approach that match more like a regular season game.
"We may play a few more people, going 15 or 16 deep where we normally play 13 or 14, but we will put the best 11 out to start the game," he said. "It may not be the same starting 11 against Denver in the first game of the season, but it will give us a benchmark."
