Milwaukee - The Marquette University men's soccer team (1-5-1, 0-3-0 BIG EAST) came up just short again in its bid to collect the squad's first BIG EAST victory of the 2007 campaign, falling 1-0 at Rutgers (2-4-1, 1-1-0 BIG EAST) Sunday afternoon.
The Golden Eagles have now dropped three-straight 1-0 decisions against league opponents, including setbacks to nationally ranked Notre Dame and Villanova. Four of the team's five losses in 2007 have come by just one goal.
Second-year head coach Louis Bennett shuffled the lineup in order to try and generate some much-needed offense, but unfortunately the roster moves didn't play out the way the coaching staff would have liked.
The Scarlet Knights concluded the day with a 25-9 advantage in overall shots, but that margin dipped to just 9-4 in the shots-on-goal category. Marquette was able to weather the storm until the 85th minute when RU's Dilly Duka was finally able to sneak the ball past goalkeeper Steve Purdy with a shot from inside the box.
"I was very proud of the way our team battled through adversity today," Bennett said. "We kept pushing and created some good scoring chances. Playing on the road can be very difficult and we certainly witnessed that first hand."
Purdy, who was making his first appearance since the opening weekend, finished the day with seven saves.
"Steve (Purdy) played very well and obviously made some key saves for us," Bennett said.
Freshman Stefan Antonijevic led the squad with three shot attempts, but was the only MU player to collect more than one attempt.
