STORRS, Conn. - The Marquette women's tennis team collected a pair of BIG EAST Conference victories today defeating Connecticut, 6-1, and Providence, 7-0, Sunday at the UConn Tennis Courts in Storrs, Conn. With the victories the Golden Eagles improve to 9-11 overall and 4-1 in conference play.
The Golden Eagles held it together against the Huskies and Friars and overcame less than ideal outdoor playing conditions.
"Overall it was a great day for us and we adjusted well to playing outside in 35-degree weather," said head coach Jody Bronson. "We stayed focused and got what had to be done, done. Everyone stepped up today and it was good to get two conference wins. We showed resiliency and toughness, and pulled together to get the wins. I am proud of their overall effort."
Marquette got the day started with the 6-1 win at Connecticut. The Golden Eagles dominated doubles play claiming all three matches. Freshman Christina Ruiz and sophomore Elly Strother shut out their No. 3 counterparts, 8-0. Senior Shannon Brown and junior Robin Metzler followed with an 8-4 win over Porter and Ali Campitiello at No. 2, and the No. 1 duo of senior Erin Watkins and Rachael Hush rounded out the doubles point with an 8-6 defeat of LoRusso and Herb.
UConn's lone win of the day came at No. 5 when Campitiello took down Brown at No. 5, 6-0, 6-1, to tie the team score 1-1.
From there it was all Marquette. In its next five singles win, the Golden Eagles dropped just two sets.
Junior Lauren Little returned to the line-up in fine fashion with a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 1. Victories at Nos. 2, 4 and 6 followed to clinch the win.
The Golden Eagles used the momentum of the win against Connecticut into its match with Providence and held the Friars scoreless in doubles positions and at three singles slots.
After sweeping the doubles point, Watkins (No. 1), Ruiz (No. 3) and Brown (No. 5) each walked away with 6-0, 6-0 straight set shutouts. Hush dropped just one point in the first set and went on to win, 6-1, 6-0, while Strother and Metzler defeated their Friar counterparts, 6-0, 6-1.
Marquette will be back in action at Helfaer Tennis Stadium on Friday, April 4, to host Cincinnati at 4 p.m.
