Golden Eagles Fall 4-1 to DePaul

TAMPA, Fla. - The No. 4 seed Marquette women's tennis team was unable to rebound from losing the doubles point and dropped 4-1 to No. 5 seed DePaul in the second round of the BIG EAST Tournament Friday afternoon at Varsity Tennis Courts in Tampa, Fla. Junior Robin Metzler earned the Golden Eagles lone point of the day winning at No. 6 singles.
The loss puts Marquette (12-13) on the consolation side of the bracket where MU will play No. 8 seed Rutgers Saturday at Noon ET on the Andros Dorm Courts. Marquette defeated Rutgers, 5-2, on March 1. Meanwhile the Blue Demons (17-5) advance to play No. 1 seed Notre Dame Saturday at 9 a.m. ET on Varsity Courts.
In the two teams' second meeting in six days, DePaul started off the same way it did in its last match against the Golden Eagles by winning the doubles point. The Blue Demons secured wins at Nos. 1 and 2 to take the early lead.
The Blue Demons went on to capture three straight set singles matches at Nos. 1, 2 and 3 to move on. Metzler gave the Golden Eagles hope with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Gambrell at No. 6, but by the time her match was finished, the match was already of out reach for MU.
