QUEENS, N.Y. - Junior Angel Robinson scored 20 points and sophomore Jessica Pachko added 14 as the Marquette women's basketball team fell at St. John's on Tuesday evening, 71-58. Marquette moves to 1-1 in BIG EAST play, 10-5 overall, while St. John's improves to 1-1 in league action, 13-2 overall.
Robinson led all scorers with 20 points as MU shot 38.2 percent (21-of-55) from the floor.
St. John's had four players in double figures lead by DaShena Stevens with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Nadirah McKenith added 10 points, all from the free throw line. Shennika Smith and Centhya Hart came off the bench to contribute 14 and 10 points, respectively.
A St. John's 9-0 run helped the Red Storm take a six point lead, 24-18, with 6:40 to play in the first. Junior Tatiyiana McMorris hit a three to cut it to three points at 24-21, but St. John's quickly pushed the lead to seven points, 30-23, and owned a 10-point advantage with 59 seconds remaining in the half.
The Golden Eagles went in to the locker room trailing, 35-29, after closing out the stanza by scoring the final four points.
The Golden Eagles kept the score within six points for the first eight minutes of the second half, but the Red Storm took a 15-point lead, 56-41, following a 11-2 run.
The Golden Eagles rallied to come within six points on two different occasions in the final five minutes, but that was as close as they would get. St. John's closed the game out with a 10-2 run.
For the game the Red Storm converted 40 percent (24-of-60) of its shots from the floor and made 20-of-28 of its free throw attempts.
The Golden Eagles return home to play Seton Hall Sunday, Jan. 10, at the Al McGuire Center. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
