MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University women's tennis team will begin its 2011-12 dual season with a pair of home matches on Saturday, Jan. 28 at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium. The Golden Eagles will host UIC at 10 a.m., before taking on Green Bay later that evening at 5 p.m.
MU opened its spring season with a trip to Bloomington, Ind., last weekend for the IU Winter Invitational. Freshman Ana Pimienta wrapped up the invitational with an unblemished 3-0 singles record and sophomore Rocio Diaz posted a 2-1 mark.
Marquette returns three players from a team that went 19-11 in dual matches last spring. Seniors Olga Fischer and Gillian Hush each captured double-digit singles victories in 2011, while Diaz recorded an overall 11-4 doubles record with Fischer at the No. 2 and 3 spots.
UIC dropped its opening dual match, 5-2, against Wisconsin on Jan. 21. After the Badgers captured the dual match point, UIC was able to pick up points from senior Elisa Simonetti and junior Haley Craig at the No. 3 and 5 spots, respectively.
Green Bay has yet to capture a point this season, losing to both Eastern Michigan and Wisconsin in straight sets to fall to 0-2 on the campaign.
Last season, Marquette opened dual match play with a 4-3 victory over UIC, before topping Green Bay, 7-0, in straight sets later in the season. MU went 4-0 in dual matches against Horizon League opponents in 2011.
