MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University women's tennis team will wrap up its six-match homestand on Friday, March 2, when it welcomes BIG EAST foe Rutgers to Helfaer Tennis Stadium at 1 p.m. CT, before concluding the weekend by traveling to Indiana on Sunday, March 4 to battle the Hoosiers at 10 a.m. CT.
Marquette (7-2) split its contests last weekend, topping Ball State 5-2 on Feb. 24, and falling to Wisconsin in a hard fought, 4-3, decision two days later. The loss to the Badgers was MU's first home defeat of the campaign.
Over the weekend, seniors Gillian Hush and Olga Fischer extended their singles win streaks to 10 and five matches, respectively. Sophomore Rocio Diaz has settled into a grove this season, winning seven of her nine matches at the No. 5 and 6 positions.
MU has posted winning records at every singles and doubles position through nine contests.
Rutgers (5-2) began the dual season winning three-straight matches and since then is 2-2, which includes a 4-3 win over Georgetown on Feb. 24. The Scarlet Knights have gotten the majority of their points this season from Stefina Balasa, Lindsay Balsamo and Morgan Ivey. Combined, the trio has earned 16 victories in singles play.
Indiana (8-2) earned a 5-2 victory over Kentucky on Feb. 26, after suffering its second defeat of the campaign just two days earlier at Notre Dame. The Hoosiers posted an impressive seven-match win streak earlier this season, spanning from Jan. 22-Feb. 11. Sophomore Kayla Fujimoto is 8-0 for IU at the No. 4 and 6 spots. The Hoosiers have defended home court well this season, posting a 5-1 mark at the IU Tennis Center.
