MILWAUKEE--The Marquette women's tennis squad (9-5) got back to its winning ways on Tuesday afternoon with a 7-0 victory over Illinois State at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium.
The Golden Eagles were playing on their home court for the first time since February and got off to a quick 2-0 lead due to a forfeit from the Redbirds because of injury.
Ali Dawson and Aleeza Kanner teamed at No. 2 doubles and bested Chanel Scudiero and Catherine Shulman, 6-2. On the No. 1 court, Ana Pimienta and Erin Gebes dropped just their fourth match this season, 6-3. MU earned the doubles point as the No. 3 tandem for Illinois State could not play.
In singles, Gebes made quick work of her opponent, 6-1, 6-0 on the No. 2 court and improves to 8-5 in singles play this year. Paula Tormos Sanchez finished close behind with her own 6-1, 6-0 victory on the No. 5 court. Her win was the fourth point and officially clinched the match for Marquette.
Dawson fought to a 6-1, 6-3 win in the No. 4 singles position and Diana Tokar was victorious on the No. 3 court, 6-1, 6-2 over Scudiero.
After dropping her first set, 3-6, Pimienta fought back to force a tie break after a 6-4 win in the second set and battled to a 12-10 tiebreak victory, which secured the sweep for the Golden Eagles.
Marquette will travel to Cincinnati this weekend for a stop at BIG EAST opponent Xavier on Saturday, March 21 before traveling to former conference opponent Cincinnati on Sunday, March 22.
