RIVER HILLS, Wis. - Garrett Loomis posted a 1-over-par 141 (70-71) in 36 holes on Sunday, finishing tied for ninth and leading Marquette into the sixth position at the Marquette Intercollegiate at Milwaukee Country Club.
The Golden Eagles (290-285-575) are just four strokes back of fourth-place Liberty and two behind fifth-place SMU - the threesome of teams will go off of hole No. 1 beginning at 8 a.m. CT on Monday.
Northwestern sits in first place at even par for the tournament (283-277-560) - second place UCLA trails the Wildcats by just two strokes.
DAY 1 NOTES
- Loomis played a consistent 36 holes on Sunday, posting four birdies, five bogeys and 27 par makes.
- Freshman Matthew Bachmann had the lowest round of the day for all MU players, shooting a 2-under-par second round 68 while playing as an individual.
- He shot a 5-over-par 75 in the first round, but saved his best for the first half of his second round, posting four birdies on his first ten holes, teeing off No. 13.
- Freshman Matt Murlick turned in the best low round in the starting lineup on Sunday for Marquette, shooting a 1-under-par 69 in the second round. He birdied three times in the second round, including twice on the back nine.
- Murlick has been consistent in his first collegiate season - he entered the event second on MU in season scoring at 73.3 strokes per round.
- The shotgun start first round began at 8:35 a.m. CT, and was played in steady rain coming from the east off of Lake Michigan for most of the first round.
- Austin Kendziorski, playing as an individual, had Marquette's shot of the day in the first round when he chipped in his third shot on the par 5 No. 3 to eagle.
- The first round average score was 74.26 in the first round, hampered in part by the rain - scores dropped in the second round to 72.85 on the par 70 course when the weather cleared.
- Marquette made 21 birdies, tied for third most in the field.
