MILWAUKEE--The Marquette University women's tennis team is set to hit the court again this weekend when the squad welcomes in-state foe Green Bay to the Helfaer Tennis Stadium for a 5 p.m. Central time matchup on Saturday Feb. 20.
The Golden Eagles have dropped their last two matches after falling to non-conference opponents Iowa and Western Michigan last week. Marquette now sits at 4-3 on the season having claimed victories in four of their first five matches, including consecutive 7-0 sweeps against Milwaukee and IUPUI to open the season.
In the loss to WMU, senior Erin Gebes earned a 6-4, 6-2 victory at the No. 2 position, Diana Tokar triumphed 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 at the No. 4 spot, and freshman Leoni Daems notched a 6-2, 1-6, 6-4 victory at the No. 6 slot, but MU failed to claim points at the No. 1, No. 5, and No. 7 spots and took another hit at No. 3 where sophomore Paula Tormos Sanchez dropped a tough 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (7-4) tilt, allowing the Broncos to claim the final point, and secure the 4-3 victory.
On the season, Gebes now moves to 5-2, with all of her matches having been played as the No. 2, while Tormos Sanchez drops to 5-2 on the campaign, owning a 1-2 mark at the No. 3 spot. Meanwhile, Aleeza Kanner, who did not play against Western Michigan, maintains her 6-0 on the season with each victory coming from the No. 5 slot.
Green Bay enters the match-up with MU having dropped all four of their season-opening matches including their last time out, where the Phoenix were bested 0-5 at the hands of Creighton.
Following the showdown with Green Bay, MU will hit the road again and travel to Bloomington, Ind., for a matchup with Indiana at 10 a.m. C.T. on Feb. 28.
