
MU Wins Seventh Straight, 88-67 over Xavier

MILWAUKEE--The Marquette women's basketball team rolled to an 88-67 victory over Xavier Sunday afternoon behind 19 points from Allazia Blockton, 16 points and five assists from Danielle King and 12 points with eight rebounds for Erika Davenport.
Amani Wilborn also chipped in 15 for the Golden Eagles (13-5, 7-0 BIG EAST) and nine MU players registered at least two points.
For Xavier (8-10, 1-6 BIG EAST), Imani Partlow led the way with 19 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Aaliyah Dunham also turned in a strong performance, notching 12 points and six assists.
With the win, the Golden Eagles improved to a conference-best 7-0 in BIG EAST play including a 9-0 home mark that has seen Marquette win 15 straight at the Al McGuire Center dating back to last season. Marquette last was undefeated at home in the 1999-2000 season, where the Golden Eagles turned in a perfect 13-0 mark.
Although Marquette won by a sizeable margin, the first quarter was closely contested and ended with a 20-16 edge for the Golden Eagles, fueled by six points apiece from Isabelle Spingola and Davenport and seven forced turnovers. For Xavier, six different players got on the board for a balanced attack, led by five from Partlow.
The Golden Eagles surged out to a 13-point lead at the half after Selena Lott nailed a corner triple and King banked in a half-court heave. At the break, eight Marquette players were on the scoreboard, led by eight each from King and Spingola. Davenport also turned in a strong half, racking up six points and six boards. For Xavier, Partlow notched eight points and seven rebounds and Byrd chipped in seven points.
Marquette opened the third on a tear, leading by as much as 32 after a quarter-ending and-1 layup from Wilborn. Using the 34-15 advantage in the quarter, the Golden Eagles cruised to victory.
The Golden Eagles shared the ball well all night, racking up 21 assists to just eight turnovers. The defense also proved stout, forcing Xavier into 38 percent shooting and causing 21 turnovers.
Marquette will hit the road for a three-game trip beginning with a match-up at the Georgetown Hoyas Jan. 19 at 6 p.m. Central time and will not be back home until Feb. 2 against Providence at 7 p.m. CT.
