Barber tallies a floor-high 17 kills; Haak records her third double-double
MILWAUKEE – The No. 19 Marquette University volleyball team completed its fifth consecutive win and sweep in a swift 3-0 sweep against Butler (25-12, 25-13, 25-22) on Wednesday night at the Al McGuire Center.
Junior Allie Barber led the way for Marquette with 17 kills, a match high, while senior Anna Haak registered her third double-double of the season with 11 digs and 10 kills. Both redshirt senior Jenna Rosenthal and sophomore Hope Werch had effective hitting nights with no errors and a .562 clip and a stellar .636 mark, respectively.
Marquette (15-4, 6-1) took the first two sets with ease, outhitting the Bulldogs .353 to a blank .000 in the first and .500 to just a .107 clip in the second set.
In a tightly played third set the Golden Eagles were outhit by Butler but rallied behind Barber's eight kills in the frame. MU held onto a 25-22 victory despite two lead changes and 11 times that the score was tied as the Bulldogs pressed and played tougher defense coming up with three blocks in the set.
Junior Lauren Speckman dished out 21 assists in the win sharing setting duties with sophomore Sarah Rose who added 18 assists, while classmate Martha Konovodoff registered a team-high 15 digs.
"We have three matches this week, so we were happy to get out tonight in a 3-0 win," said head coach Ryan Theis. "Game one was exceptional, we were able to take away some of the things that Butler likes to do and I thought some people made some really nice stops defensively. It was good to see some of the work we have been doing pay off."
Butler (6-14, 3-5) was led by both Brooke Gregory and Bri Lilly with eight kills apiece, while Maddie Freiwald handed out 23 assists.
The Golden Eagles will hit the road and travel east for two matches this weekend. Marquette takes on St. John's on Friday, Oct. 12 at 4 p.m. CT before traveling to Seton Hall on Saturday, Oct. 13 at 6 p.m. CT.
