The Golden Eagles fall to 1-4-1 in BIG EAST action
CINCINNATI – The Marquette University women's soccer team suffered a 3-0 defeat against Xavier on Sunday afternoon at the XU Soccer Complex in Cincinnati.
The Golden Eagles (3-10-2, 1-4-1 BIG EAST) held a 16-13 edge in shots after outshooting Xavier 12-5 in the second half but could not overcome a 1-0 halftime deficit. Junior goalkeeper Maddy Henry made six saves in net, including a stop on Xavier's leading scorer Samantha Dewey on a penalty kick in the 74th minute.
Dewey posted three points on the final two goals for the Musketeers (9-6-1, 3-2-1 BIG EAST) with an assist of Molly McLaughlin's 58th minute marker and a goal of her own to close out the scoring in the 84th minute.
Claire Fisher scored a 40th minute goal to give Xavier the lead before the half, by which time Henry had made four saves.
The Golden Eagles came out aggressively to start the second half, firing three of the first four shots, but could not get on the board before McLaughlin's tally.
Junior defender Emily Hess posted a pair of early shots for MU that were saved by XU's Toni Bizzarro, who had a total of eight stops on the afternoon.
Marquette freshman Katrina Wetherell posted a match-high five shots, while Abby Hess had three, including a dangerous chance in the 60th minute that she headed into the arms of Bizzarro.
The Golden Eagles resume action on Thursday evening at Valley Fields against No. 4 Georgetown at 7 p.m. Central time.
