Carrie Madden and Heather Handwork scored in their final collegiate games
MILWAUKEE – Three late goals lifted the Marquette University women's soccer team to a 4-0 victory over Seton Hall on Senior Night at Valley Fields on Thursday evening. Â
Freshman defender Katie Koker scored her first career goal late in the first half and Abby Hess added MU's second in the 75th before seniors Heather Handwork and Carrie Madden tallied markers in the final three minutes.
Katrina Wetherell had a pair of great early looks for the Golden Eagles (4-11-3, 2-5-2 BIG EAST) before Koker broke onto the scoreboard in the 42nd minute. The Racine native's goal came on a well struck ball placed over the head of SHU keeper Jackie Robinson from just outside the 18-yard box on the right side of the pitch. Koker had a deep throw-in to Carrie Madden who punched the ball back out above the 18 along the right flank.
The goal from Hess came in the 75th minute off an assist from Handwork. The low shot came from just 10 yards out and less than 15 minutes later, Handwork sent a rocket past Robinson for her lone goal of the season and first since 2014.
Madden scored the game's final goal on a header in the 89th minute.
Wetherell's best early chance came in the 18th minute, which she struck from the center of the pitch just outside the 18. The freshman received a great pass back from Abby Hess, but her shot sailed into Robinson's arms.
Maddy Henry, who was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Monday afternoon, did her best to keep the Pirates off the board in the 53rd minute on a shot that sailed just under the crossbar from Dani Brinckman. Henry ended the night with three saves and Marquette earned its sixth clean sheet of the season. Senior Sloane Carlson played the final 13 minutes in net for the Golden Eagles.
Marquette honored its seven-player senior class after the match as fifth-year seniors Ryley Bugay, Madden and Handwork concluded their careers in Blue & Gold alongside Leah Celarek, Carlson, Allison Jacobson and Jamie Kutey.
