The Golden Eagles dropped their third match in BIG EAST action on Sunday
PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island – Katie Day scored a 72nd minute goal off a corner kick as the Marquette University women's soccer dropped a 1-0 decision to Providence on Sunday afternoon at Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium.
Marquette freshman midfielder Katrina Wetherell appeared to score an equalizer in the 87th minute, but the tally was negated by an MU penalty in the box off the corner kick. The Golden Eagles (3-9-2, 1-3-1 BIG EAST) fired 10 shots to PC's 11 on the afternoon and held a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
MU goalkeeper Maddy Henry, who made four saves on the day, made a pair by the ninth minute to keep the Friars off the board as they pushed the tempo early. Henry also made a pair of big saves on PC's leading scorer Hannah McNulty early in the second half before Katie Day posted the match winner.
Day's first goal of the year came off a corner kick from Kayla Steeves on the left side of the pitch.
Marquette owns an 11-2-2 record against the Friars, which includes the first loss in program history to PC last season in Milwaukee. Amber Birchwell's 17th minute tally proved to be the difference in a 1-0 PC victory and snapped a scoreless stretch of 709:59 for the Friars against MU that dated back to 2010. All told, Marquette has posted a 32-4 scoring advantage over the duration of a series that dates to MU's entrance to the BIG EAST in 2005.
The Golden Eagles will have a mid-week bye before heading to Xavier for a match on Sunday, Oct. 14.
