MILWAUKEE – Markus Howard posted the highest scoring total for a Marquette player in a home game in 12 years as the Golden Eagles defeated Bethune-Cookman 92-59 on Saturday afternoon at Fiserv Forum.
Howard poured in 37 points on the afternoon, tying the second-highest mark of his career on 10-of-16 shooting from the floor and a 10-of-11 mark from the charity stripe. He also made seven shots from deep to move him past Brian Wardle (197) and former teammate Andrew Rowsey (196) and into eighth place in Marquette history with 202 career 3-pointers.
Howard added eight rebounds and seven assists in the victory for the Golden Eagles (2-0), while freshman Joey Hauser chipped in 11 points, seven rebounds and six assists off the bench.
The Golden Eagles overcame a sluggish start to take a 51-27 lead at the break on the strength of 26 first half points from Howard. The mark is the highest first half point total of his career and ranks behind his 32 second half points in his 52-point outing at Providence last season.
Theo John, making the first start of his career, won the opening tip and chipped in four points and a pair of rebounds in the opening half – he ended 4-of-4 from the floor with eight points. John posted his first career double-double in Tuesday's season opener against UMBC with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Bethune-Cookman (0-2) was led by 22 points from Isaiah Bailey.
