BRYAN, Texas -- Marquette's Hunter Eichhorn and Matt Murlick each turned in 2-over-par 74s to sit tied for 37th place after Monday's opening round of the NCAA Bryan Regional, hosted by Texas A&M at Traditions Club.
Eichhorn and Murlick are competing as individuals in the 54-hole regional, which includes a 13-team, 75-player field. Only six strokes separate the leaders at 4-under-par and the six players tied for 37th.
After bogeys on No. 5 and No. 7, Eichhorn made birdies on No. 8 and No. 9 to post an even par 36 on the front nine in his NCAA regional debut. Eichhorn's string of eight pars on the back nine holes, including five straight, was disrupted by a double bogey on the 551-yard Par 5 15th.
Murlick sat at 3-over-par through 13 holes, but made two birdies in his final five to finish with an even par 36 on the back nine.
The field averaged a first round score of 74.29 on the Par 72, 7,121 yard course.
Texas A&M's Chandler Phillips and Brandon Smith, and Baylor's Cooper Dossey are tied for the lead with opening round 68s. No. 2 Texas A&M, which won the Marquette Intercollegiate at Erin Hills in October, leads the team event at 9-under-par.
Eichhorn (9:31 a.m. CT) and Murlick (9:42 a.m. CT) go off in successive groups tomorrow on hole No. 1 at Traditions Club.
