The Golden Eagles host Wisconsin on Monday for their home opener at Valley Fields
SAN LUIS OBISPO, California – The Marquette University women's soccer team began its 2018 campaign with a scoreless draw against Cal Poly on Thursday evening at Alex G. Spanos Stadium.
The Golden Eagles (0-0-1) were out-shot 17-15 as junior goalkeeper Maddy Henry made five saves in net to begin the 26th season of women's soccer at Marquette. Midfielder Ryley Bugay and defenders Allison Jacobson and Bri Jaeger joined Henry by playing all 110 minutes in MU's first draw since Sept. 14 of last season against Illinois State.
The two teams played scoreless through the first 45 minutes at Spanos Stadium, while Henry made three saves, including a pair of Cal Poly freshman Ava McCray.
The Mustangs were the aggressors early before the Golden Eagles were able to apply pressure midway through the first frame. MU's best look of the opening frame came in the 18th minute on a ball played through the box to a streaking Carrie Madden by Allison Jacobson. Jacobson's cross just missed Madden, who had gotten past the backline of the CP defense.
Henry made a huge save on McCray in the 58th minute while diving to her left and was aided earlier in the stanza by Jacobson clearing a ball heading in the net in the 51th minute and a little luck in the 54th minute. MU's keeper came out to play the ball with CP's Jessica Johnson moving forward to meet her. Johnson was able to redirect Henry's clearance directly behind her, narrowly missing the near post to the right.
Johnson led the Mustangs (0-0-1) with four shots on the night, while Sophia Brown made four saves.
The Golden Eagles host their home opener at Valley Fields on Monday, Aug. 20 against the University of Wisconsin at 7:30 p.m. Central time. The match will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network, through FOX Sports Go with Patrick Reed on the call.
