
Marquette faces No. 3 North Carolina on Sunday

The Golden Eagles and UNC have met three times previously at Duke and once at Notre Dame
DURHAM, North Carolina – The Marquette University women's soccer team resumes action in the Duke Nike Classic at 11 a.m. Central time on Sunday against No. 3 North Carolina at Koskinen Stadium in Durham, North Carolina.
The contest will feature a live broadcast by the ACC Network Extra through the WatchESPN application, as well as live statistics courtesy of GoDuke.com.
Marquette last met the Tar Heels in the same event in 2012, suffering a 4-0 defeat to push its record to 0-4 all-time against UNC. In addition to a 1-0 loss to then-No. 1 North Carolina in 2009 at Notre Dame, MU fell to UNC, 2-0, in 2006 and 4-1 in 2002 in the Duke adidas Classic.
The Golden Eagles (0-3-1) fell to No. 12 Duke, 2-0, on Thursday evening in their first match in Carolina despite a season-best seven save performance by junior goalkeeper Maddy Henry. Henry made a couple saves in the first four minutes of the contest and three over the final 10 minutes of the opening stanza to keep the match scoreless at the break.
Duke posted goals in the 68th and 73rd minutes and outshot Marquette, 22-4, to improve to 2-1-1 all-time against MU.
The Tar Heels (4-0-1) earned a 1-0 shutout against Providence on Thursday afternoon as Samantha Leshnak earned the victory while making one save in 45 minutes of action. MAC Hermann Watch List member Julia Ashley scored the winning goal in the 40th minute as UNC held a 19-7 edge in shots and a 12-1 advantage in corner kicks.
North Carolina owns a pair of victories over nationally ranked squads this season and fought to a 1-1 draw with then-No. 21 Texas on Aug. 22. North Carolina downed then-No. 21 UCF, 1-0, on Sunday with Taylor Otto scoring her second goal of the year for the winner in the 16th minute. She leads the Tar Heels with a pair of goals and five points heading into Sunday.
The Tar Heels are led by head coach Anson Dorrance, who is in his 42nd year at UNC overall and has led the Carolina women to 21 NCAA Championships.
