The Golden Eagles surrender three first-half goals en route to third-straight loss
ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Marquette University men's soccer team was unable to overcome a first-half barrage by the Michigan Wolverines, falling 3-0 at the U-M Soccer Stadium on Monday night.
Â
The Golden Eagles (2-3) fell for the third-straight game and were unable to find a goal for the second time in-a-row, but it wasn't for a lack of chances. Marquette knocked on the doorstep throughout the final 45 minutes, but could not find the back of the net.
Â
Meanwhile, the Wolverines (4-1) were able to convert on three of their seven chances in the first half as Austin Swiech (13'), Robbie Mertz (14') and Jack Hallahan (29') found the twine.
Â
With the score 2-0 in the 25th minute, Patrick Seagrist sent a promising chance screaming off the crossbar and Michigan turned into a counterattack that eventually led to its fourth corner kick and third goal.
Â
The Marquette attack showed promise to start the second half, building possession in the attacking third with Luka Prpa and Lukas Sunesson nearly connecting on a score in the 51st minute. Over the next 10 minutes, Sunesson and company earned more chances, but came up empty.
Â
Similar to their first loss of the year at Saint Louis, the Golden Eagles were able to prevent further damage in the second half, but also were unable to break through offensively.
Â
Michigan registered seven shots in each half en route to a 14-7 shots advantage. U-M also led in corner kicks, 10-6, and were whistled for 16 of 28 fouls. Each goalkeeper successful made two saves, including Cedrik Stern, who made his second start for the Golden Eagles in the past two games.
Â
The loss was the first for Marquette (3-1-1) against the Wolverines all-time and the first in three road meetings.
Â
The Golden Eagles return to action on Saturday, Sept. 15, when they host No. 15 Villanova in the BIG EAST Conference opener at Valley Fields. Kickoff is slated for a 7:05 p.m. Central time start.
