The Golden Eagles snapped UWM’s 27-match unbeaten streak, the 12th longest in NCAA history
MILWAUKEE – Led by a 73rd minute goal from Cedarburg's Bri Jaeger and six saves from Maddy Henry, the Marquette University women's soccer team ended the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee's 27-match unbeaten streak in a 1-0 victory on Monday night at Valley Fields.
The win was the first at home for the Golden Eagles (2-6-1) this season and the first over Milwaukee (7-1-0) since 2013. Marquette improves to 10-9-8 all-time against the Panthers in the longest running series in program history.
The Panthers entered the night with the 12th longest unbeaten streak in NCAA Division I history (23-0-4) and were shut out for the first time this season.
Jaeger's match winner came on a header off a set piece from freshman Katrina Wetherell on the left flank. The well-struck ball from Wetherell found Jaeger on the far side of the net for her second career goal and the first since Sept. 10, 2017 at Rhode Island.
Henry made six saves but none bigger than a diving stop on a penalty kick from Mckaela Schmelzer in the 80th minute to preserve the lead and a clean sheet. The PK came after a yellow card was issued to MU's Ryley Bugay in the box.
The Golden Eagles posted a positive shot differential for the first time this season, firing 14 to UWM's 12, but Milwaukee held a 10-2 edge in corners, including an 8-1 advantage in the second half.
The Golden Eagles switched their lineup heading into Monday's match with Heather Handwork making her first start since Sept. 10, 2017 at forward alongside Abby Hess. Allison Jacobson also reentered the starting XI in place of Ryley Bugay at center back.
The two teams have meet in each of the last 26 years during the regular season, while Marquette claimed the lone NCAA tournament matchup, 1-0, in 2005 at Valley Fields. MU entered the match 0-2-2 in the last four meetings after going 4-0-1 in the five meetings from 2009-13. Marquette's previous victory in the series was a 5-0 win at Milwaukee on Sept. 23, 2013 and the Golden Eagles now lead the all-time series 10-9-8.
Marquette concludes action in its three-match homestand and hosts its BIG EAST Conference opener on Sunday, Sept. 23 at 1 p.m. against Butler at Valley Fields. The contest will air live on the BIG EAST Digital Network through FOX Sports Go.

Marquette had a number of good looks in the opening half as it outshot Milwaukee, 6-3, including three shots from midfielder Leah Celarek. The senior also had a couple looks to set up her teammates in the attacking third during the first half. She was just long for Heather Handwork at the left post in the third minute and fed Abby Hess from the right flank in the 17th minute, but the play was called offsides.A look at Bri Jaeger's goal to break things open against Milwaukee. pic.twitter.com/2tPyHb7Q4s
