
Marquette drops BIG EAST opener to Butler, 1-0

The Golden Eagles fall to 12-2 all-time in BIG EAST home openers
MILWAUKEE –  The Marquette University women's soccer team fell to Butler, 1-0, in its BIG EAST Conference opener on Sunday afternoon at Valley Fields.
The Golden Eagles (2-7-1, 0-1 BIG EAST) dropped a BIG EAST opener for the first time at Valley Fields after entering the contest 5-0 when their opening BIG EAST match was played at the venue. They are now also 9-5 all-time in BIG EAST lid-lifters and 12-2 in BIG EAST home openers.
Butler (7-3-0, 1-0 BIG EAST) out-shot Marquette, 11-10, including the match's lone goal from Anja Savich in the 34th minute. Savich scored in the middle of the box on a feed from Elan Gutlove.
Junior goalkeeper Maddy Henry made three saves in 90 minutes, while Hannah Luedtke and Leone Doege split time evenly in net for Butler.
Marquette had several good looks in the second half, including a diving header by senior Jamie Kutey as one of eight MU shots in the frame. The game was a classic physical BIG EAST match, with a total of 37 fouls, 24 of them coming from Butler.
Marquette travels to Villanova to continue BIG EAST Conference play on Thursday, Sept. 27 at 3 p.m. Central time.
