The Golden Eagles were unable to recapture the Milwaukee Cup on Wednesday
MILWAUKEE — Despite a late push that included an 83rd minute goal by Patrick Seagrist, Marquette was unable to find the equalizer as Milwaukee recorded the 2-1 victory at Valley Fields on Wednesday and retained the cup for the second-straight year.
Â
Seagrist's diving header in the 83rd minute was his second goal in as many games and third of the season, which ties him for the team lead with Connor Alba and Lukas Sunesson. Both Milwaukee tallies came off rebound attempts directly in front of the goal.
Â
The Panthers (4-2-1) got on the board in the 29th minute as Sean Holmes cleaned up Josh Kaye's rocket off the post. Then, in the 52nd minute, Kaye was the beneficiary on a rebound of Evan Conway's shot that Luis Barraza was able to make a diving save attempt on.
Â
After the second Milwaukee goal, the Golden Eagles (3-4-0) ratcheted up the intensity and created some opportunities. Following Seagrist's goal, Alba got free at the top of the box, sending one of his game-high five shots just over the bar.
Â
Marquette's flurry at the end gave it the edge in shots, 16-13, to go along with a 10-6 advantage in corner kicks.
Â
The Panthers' stood tall to nearly every threat the Golden Eagles presented. Goalkeeper Freddy Lorenzen made seven saves to preserve the win, while Barraza nearly matched him with five stops of his own.
Â
In the midst of the crosstown rivalry, freshman Alan Salmeron made his collegiate debut after missing the first six contests due to injury, playing in 45 minutes off the bench.
Â
Prior to kickoff, Marquette paid tribute to coaching legend, Steve Adlard, who passed away early Tuesday morning after his long bout with cancer. He remains the program's winningest coach with 140 career victories. The Golden Eagles will play the rest of the season sporting a black armband on each player's right arm in honor of Adlard.
Â
Nearly 1,000 spectators were on hand to witness the 46th edition of the Milwaukee Cup.
Â
Marquette returns to action and BIG EAST play as it travels to South Orange, New Jersey, to take on Seton Hall on Saturday, Sept. 22 at 6 p.m. Central time. The Golden Eagles' next home match is another in-state rivalry as the Wisconsin Badgers visit Valley Fields on Wednesday, Sept. 26.

Disappointing result, but encouraging things to take away from the second half, according to Coach Bennett. pic.twitter.com/CMwhw7b7t8

We caught up with @Pattyseags, who found the back of the net for the second-straight game. He's tied with Lukas Sunesson and Connor Alba for the team-lead with 3 goals. pic.twitter.com/LbBMfbGzDK
