The Golden Eagles held the Hoyas scoreless despite going a man down for final 58 minutes
MILWAUKEE – Despite going a man down for the final 58 minutes of play, the Marquette University men's soccer team salvaged a point against BIG EAST Conference preseason-favorite Georgetown at rainy Valley Fields on Saturday.
Â
In the 52nd minute, Alan Salmeron went in for a hard tackle on Georgetown's Sean Zawadzki and the referee issued a straight-red card, sending the freshman off and Marquette (3-6-1, 1-1-1 BIG EAST) down to 10 men for the final 58 minutes against a potent Georgetown attack.
Â
The Hoyas (5-3-2, 1-1-1 BIG EAST) entered play with the highest-scoring offense in the BIG EAST and one of the nation's top teams in average shots per game (18.9). After going a man down, the Golden Eagles manufactured quality chances and even managed to outshoot the Hoyas, 6-4, while the defense stepped up and earned Luis Barraza his third clean sheet of the season.
Â
Luka Prpa and Connor Alba led the way offensively for Marquette, tallying three shots apiece. Prpa posed Marquette's best threat of the night with a left-footed rocket that tailed just wide of the left post. Lukas Sunesson rattled off a pair of shots, while Josh Coan, Ruben Sanchez and Salmeron each registered a shot as well.
Â
Georgetown recorded 12 shots to edge Marquette by one. Kyle Zajec put two shots on target for the Hoyas, which was a team-high.
Â
The Golden Eagles and the Hoyas earned three corner kicks each by the end of regulation, but Georgetown collected five more in extra time.
Â
Patrick Seagrist, Steffen Böhm and Leo Villa went the full 90 minutes in anchoring a back line that kept the Hoyas scoreless for the first time this season.
Â
After completing its fourth match in an 11-day stretch, Marquette enjoys a full week to prepare for BIG EAST foe Providence on Saturday, Oct. 6. Kickoff is slated for 3:30 p.m. Central time.
