Senior goalkeeper Luis Barraza tied a career-high with 10 saves, but the Friars' late goal held up
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Despite a season-best effort from senior goalkeeper Luis Barraza, Marquette was stunned as host Providence converted a header off a free kick with 16 seconds remaining in regulation to pull out the 1-0 win in BIG EAST Conference action on Saturday.
Â
Barraza tied a career-high with 10 saves, including six stops in a busy first half. He denied Providence's Gil Santos three times prior to the 90th minute. It was then that Joao Serrano delivered a perfect free kick to the edge of the six-yard box and Santos, in the right spot, headed in the service for the game-winner with 16 seconds left.
Â
Santos ended the match with a game-high six shots, including four on target. The Friars (6-4-1, 3-1-0 BIG EAST) won the edge in shots (17-10) and shots on goal (11-4), but the Golden Eagles (3-7-1, 1-2-1 BIG EAST) outshot the hosts, 8-7, in the second half and came away with the edge in corners, 6-3.
Â
Diego Núñez led Marquette with three shots on the day, while Luka Prpa, Lukas Sunesson and Josh Coan added two apiece. However, it marked the third-straight match that the Golden Eagles were unable to find the back of the net, running their scoreless streak to 387 minutes.
Â
Marquette returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 13, when they play host to St. John's at Valley Fields in a 7:05 p.m. Central time start.
