Alyssa Bombacino scored her second goal of the week and third of the year
MILWAUKEE – Freshman forward Alyssa Bombacino scored the lone goal in her first career start, a 1-0 victory for the Marquette University women's soccer team over St. John's on Sunday afternoon at Valley Fields.
Making her first start for the Golden Eagles (3-8-3, 1-2 BIG EAST), Bombacino brought the highlight of the afternoon with her goal in the 77th minute to put Marquette ahead for good. With an assist from Abby Hess and Heather Handwork, Bombacino was able to sneak one past the keeper from 15 yards out on the right side of the box.
Junior goalkeeper Maddy Henry also made seven saves in net for Marquette in her third clean sheet of the season.
Bombacino's goal was the third of her career and the second this week after also posting a tally in Marquette's loss at Villanova on Thursday afternoon. Two of her three goals have been match winners.
Marquette is 14-1-1 all-time against the Red Storm in a series that began when MU entered the BIG EAST for the 2005 campaign. The Golden Eagles have won each of the last four matchups after a 3-0 victory by SJU in Queens in 2015.
MU returns to the pitch at Valley Fields on Thursday evening against BIG EAST Conference rival DePaul during Marquette's Homecoming Week. The contest will air live at 7 p.m. Central time on GoMarquette.com.
