MU will play the first of three spring scrimmages on Saturday in College Park
MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University men's lacrosse team begins its spring exhibition slate on Saturday, Jan. 19 against the University of Maryland in College Park at 11 a.m. Central time at Maryland Stadium.
The scrimmage will mark the first meeting between the two programs.
The Golden Eagles, entering their seventh season, are coming off a year in which they went 6-8 and fell to No. 3 Denver in the BIG EAST Conference semifinals. Marquette lost All-BIG EAST goalie Cole Blazer and face-off specialist Zachary Melillo to graduation but returns the rest of its starting lineup. MU will be bolstered by the return of 2017 All-BIG EAST midfielder Tanner Thomson from redshirt and the addition of a pair of transfers in midfielder Andrew Romagnoli (Delaware) and goalie John Hulsman (Bellarmine).
Maryland, which started playing lacrosse in 1924, has won 12 national titles, including three NCAA crowns, most recently during the 2017 season. The Terrapins have advanced to NCAA Championship Weekend in each of the last five seasons and played in three-straight NCAA title games (2015-17).
They recorded a mark of 14-4 and 4-1 in the Big Ten last season and advanced to the NCAA semifinals with the help of midfielder Tim Rotanz, who is now in his first season as an MU volunteer assistant coach.
