QUEENS, New York – Sophomore Macey Shock scored a 101st minute goal as the Marquette University women's soccer team completed a come-from-behind victory, 3-2, at St. John's on Thursday evening at Belson Stadium in Queens.
The Golden Eagles (4-8-1, 1-2-1 BIG EAST) used goals from Alex Campana, Kylie Sprecher and Shock to recover from a two-goal halftime deficit in their seventh overtime game of the season.
Shock's match winner came under a minute into the second overtime period on a ball served into the box from senior left back Emily Hess. The ball moved past a St. John's defender to Shock on the right side, who buried it inside the left post with SJU goalkeeper Meredith Reinhardt guarding the near side.
The Red Storm (4-9-0, 1-3-0) used a pair of early scores from redshirt junior Zsani Kajan to take a 2-0 lead into the break.
Kajan tacked on an early goal in the sixth minute and added her sixth of the season in the 36th minute. The Golden Eagles held a 5-4 edge in shots over the opening 45 minutes but could not break onto the scoreboard as Reinhardt made a pair of saves.
Campana scored her second career goal in the 61th minute with a left-footed boot after weaving through SJU defenders in the box. Her strike beat Reinhardt inside the left post to pull the Golden Eagles within one.
Marquette continued to press the rest of the frame in search of the equalizer, which came from Kyle Sprecher in the 83rd minute. Sophomore Katrina Wetherell set up for a free kick just inside midfield and the ball landed at the feet of Sprecher in a crowd just outside the six-yard box. Sprecher calmly buried the tying goal for her first score since Sept. 1 against Michigan.
It is just the second time this season that the Golden Eagles have scored at least twice in the same contest. The other was a 2-1 victory over Colorado State on Sept. 22 at Valley Fields.
The Golden Eagles resume their road trip on Sunday against Seton Hall in South Orange, New Jersey at noon Central time.
