Three Golden Eagles record double-doubles
CINCINNATI, Ohio—The Marquette volleyball team extended its win-streak to eight matches as the 10th-ranked Golden Eagles topped Xavier 3-1 (25-15, 19-25, 25-23, 25-16) on Wednesday morning at the Cintas Center.
Marquette (14-2, 4-0) had three players record double-doubles, while sophomore Claire Mosher had a career day dishing out a career-best 23 assists and collecting a career-high 15 digs. Junior Sarah Rose earned her second double-double of the season with 20 assists and 10 digs as classmate Martha Konovodoff earned her second career double-double with 20 digs and a career-high-tying 10 assists.
Senior Allie Barber paced the offense with 16 kills, while junior Hope Werch and senior Gwyn Jones totaled eight and seven kills, respectively.
Head coach Ryan Theis commented after the match, "Andy Reid said it best this week, 'Not all of Mozart's paintings were masterpieces, but we'll take the win.'"
After a stellar first set in which the Golden Eagles combined to hit .682, MU faltered in the second set, hitting at just a .121 percentage with seven errors as Xavier (4-8, 1-1) won the set to even the match. The third frame was tight throughout with the score tied nine times and two lead changes until the Golden Eagles pulled out the narrow 25-23 victory.
Marquette overcame poor hitting again in the fourth set and jumped out to an early lead that they held on to for the entire set, leading to a 25-16 win.
Xavier was led by Norah Painter with 13 kills as MaryAnn O'Toole and Madi Kutruff collected 17 and 16 digs, respectively.
The Golden Eagles will enjoy some much-needed rest and be off until Friday, Oct. 11 when the squad hosts Providence at 7 p.m. CT.
