Trio of main draw players fall to seeded opponents
The Marquette University men's tennis team concluded play at the ITA Midwest Regional on Saturday afternoon with singles main draw action in Columbus, Ohio.
The event, hosted by Ohio State University, featured a 64-team bracket of schools from across the region. The Golden Eagles were represented by a total of six players at the event, with seniors Brett Meyers, Luke Smrek and junior Luis Heredia Gomez in the main draw.
Meyers and Smrek each picked up straight-set wins in their respective opening match, but were downed by seeded players in the second round. Meyers cruised past his opponent from Illinois State in the first match, but No. 3 seed and 30th-ranked Andrew Fenty of Michigan claimed a 6-1, 6-3 decision later in the afternoon.
Smrek's reward for a hard-fought win in his first match was a meeting with top seed and 11th-ranked John McNally of Ohio State. Smrek battled the entire match, but came up short in a 6-4, 7-5 setback.
Heredia Gomez faced a seeded opponent in his first match, falling to No. 5 Zeke Clark of Illinois.
