Smrek earns wins in singles and doubles
The Marquette University men's tennis team (0-1) opened its 2020 dual match campaign with a narrow 4-3 loss at Minnesota (1-0) Saturday night in Rochester, Minn.
The Golden Eagles opened the match by claiming the valuable doubles point, winning at the No. 1 and 2 positions. Senior Brett Meyers and sophomore Fran San Andres earned a 6-3 decision at No. 2 and senior Luke Smrek and junior Luis Heredia Gomez clinched the point with a 6-4 win at No. 1.
Only a pair of Marquette players were able to earn singles wins, however, and as a result the Gophers were able to rally for the win. Smrek claimed a tiebreaker in the third set at No. 1 and freshman Stefan Dragovic earned his first career dual victory, 6-3, 7-6 over Sebastian Vile at No. 5.
The Golden Eagles return to action at Iowa on Saturday, Jan. 25. First serve is set for 11 a.m. CT.
