Barber's 18 kills leads three Golden Eagles in double figures
JAMAICA, N.Y.—The 11th-ranked Marquette University volleyball team won its third straight road game on Friday evening with a 3-1 (25-23, 28-26, 23-25, 25-15) win at St. John's.
Senior Allie Barber led three Golden Eagles (18-3, 8-1) in double digits with 18 kills, while junior Hope Werch and sophomore Ellie Koontz added 15 and 11 kills, respectively. Werch and classmate Sarah Rose each tallied a double-double as Werch added 12 digs and Rose dished 21 kills with 14 digs. It was the fifth double-double of the season for Werch and fourth for Rose.
Senior Lauren Speckman handed out 27 assists, while junior Martha Konovodoff and freshman Hannah Vanden Berg each collected 11 digs. Defensively, junior Elizabeth Orf had a stellar night as she totaled seven blocks.
"It was a great battle tonight," head coach Ryan Theis said. "Playing at St. John's is always a handful. I think one key was our comeback in the first set. We were down, 15-10 before the offense got rolling and the defense got a few timely stops. Efrosini's 10 kills in the third set had us battling, but I still like the fight our team had."
St. John's (13-9, 5-4) was led by Efrosini Alexakou with 19 kills, while Rachelle Rastelli added 11. Erica DiMaulo dished out 44 assists and Amanda Sanabia collected 17 digs.
MU and the Red Storm played a back-and-forth battle in three of the four sets as each set had multiple lead changes and was tied multiple times. Marquette charged back from a five-point deficit in the first set to win, while St. John's came back from a large deficit in the third set, which extended the match.
The Golden Eagles combined to hit .262 in the match, while holding the Red Storm to a .185 clip.
Marquette is back in action on Saturday, Oct. 26 playing at Seton Hall. First serve is set for 4 p.m. CT.
