MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University men's soccer team fell 3-0 to the No. 7-ranked Georgetown Hoyas on Saturday afternoon at Shaw Field in Washington, D.C.
With the loss, MU drops to 7-7-1 (3-4-0 BIG EAST) with two games remaining in the regular season.
The game was tied 0-0 through 16 minutes before Georgetown put its first tally on the board. GU leading scorer Jacob Montes made a run through the MU back line and evaded a slide tackle attempt by Louis Yuill, who inadvertently redirected the ball into the back of the net for an own goal.
The Hoyas tallied their second goal before half on a penalty kick in the 19th minute. Patrick Seagrist got caught in the air and fouled a GU forward in the box. Hoyas senior striker Achara capitalized on his opportunity and picked his corner to put his team up 2-0.
MU had one of its best scoring chances of the half in the 23rd minute. Senior forward Josh Coan, the Golden Eagles' leading scorer, dribbled the ball just past the circle at midfield when he noticed the GU keeper was off his line. He fired a shot from over 50 yards out that hit the top of the net as he narrowly missed cutting the Hoyas lead in half.
The only goal of the second half came in the 55th minute, when GU's Derek Dodson scored his sixth goal of the season on a cross to the back post from Achara.
MU goalkeeper Cedrik Stern made a game-high five saves and has made 22 saves in his last four games. The Golden Eagles were outshot 17-7 on the afternoon.
