MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University women's soccer team came up short on Thursday night in a nail biting 2-1 double-overtime loss against Providence College at Valley Fields.
Scoring opened in the 45th minute with a Providence goal from junior Kelsie Cummings, assisted by senior Alessandra Arace. That score was the only offense until an 80th minute lower-left post shot from freshman Alex Campana with assists coming from Emily Hess and sophomore Alyssa Bombacino.
Hess fired the ball in from just inside midfield on the left side into the box where Bombacino touched it before Campana finished her first career score.
The score remained tied at one apiece until sophomore Elayna Grillakis was able to find the net with the golden goal in the 106th minute, ending the double-overtime duel.
Both teams put up 12 shots on the night, with six of Marquette's being on target.
The Golden Eagles fall to 3-8 (0-2 BIG EAST) while the Friars improve to 7-3-1 (2-0 BIG EAST).
MU will take the pitch at Valley Fields again on Sunday, Oct. 6th to take on the Creighton University Bluejays.
