
MU Sweeps Villanova in BIG EAST Semifinals

The BIG EAST Final will take place on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. CT on FS2
MILWAUKEE—For the third straight year, the 12th-ranked Marquette volleyball team will play in the BIG EAST Championship final as the Golden Eagles swept Villanova, 25-22, 25-18, 25-19 on Friday afternoon in the semifinals of the tournament held at the Al McGuire Center.
Allie Barber's 16 kills led Marquette (27-4), while Hannah Vanden Berg added 11 kills for the day. Gwyn Jones, Hope Werch and Ellie Koontz each added eight kills as Jones and Koontz connected at a .538 and .500 clip, respectively.
Lauren Speckman and Sarah Rose dished out 21 and 20 kills, respectively, while Werch led the squad defensively with 11 digs.
The Golden Eagles took set one 25-22 and trailed Villanova in the second frame until a 4-0 spurt gave Marquette a 17-14 lead, which the squad would not relinquish. Barber tallied seven kills in the frame to help in the victory. Villanova took a lead in the third set, but once again the Golden Eagles maintained and secured the sweep.
Both teams hit over .300 in the match, while Mallory Potts led Villanova (22-9) with 12 kills.
UP NEXT: No. 2 seed Marquette will face the winner of No. 1 Creighton vs. No. 4 St. John's on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. CT on FS2.
