The Golden Eagles wait for their NCAA selection, announced on Sunday
MILWAUKEE—Allie Barber landed 23 kills and Hope Werch connected on 17, but it was not enough as the 12th-ranked and No. 2 seed Marquette volleyball team was best by No. 4 seed St. John's, 3-1 (20-25, 22-25, 25-19, 21-25) in the final of the 2019 BIG EAST Championship.
St. John's earns the BIG EAST automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, though the Golden Eagles and Creighton expect to earn at-large berths. It would be the ninth consecutive NCAA Tournament for Marquette.
Marquette (27-5) out hit the Red Storm (22-11), .287 to .241, but fell behind two sets and could not finish a comeback. Werch added 13 digs to her 17 kills for her 11th double-double this season, while Martha Konovodoff and Hannah Vanden Berg collected 14 and 10 digs, respectively.
Running the offense was Lauren Speckman handing out 30 assists, while Sarah Rose dished out 17.
