
MU Sweeps Dayton to Advance to NCAA Second Round

The Golden Eagles have matched a program record 28 wins
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind.—For the fifth time in program history and second straight year, the 16th-ranked Marquette volleyball program has advanced to the second round of the NCAA Championship as the Golden Eagles swept Dayton (25-23, 25-19, 25-22) on Friday afternoon in first round action.
With the win, Marquette improves to a 28-5 record, matching a program record for victories set by the 2018 squad.
Senior Allie Barber led all with 17 kills and hit at a .378 clip, while junior Hope Werch connected on 11 kills and hit .381 to help MU to a combined .303 hitting percentage in the match. Lauren Speckman dished out 24 assists, while Sarah Rose handed out 15 assists.
Martha Konovodoff and Hannah Vanden Berg collected 12 and 11 digs, respectively, while Vanden Berg added eight kills.
The Golden Eagles took a 25-23 win in the first set behind seven kills from Barber and a .700 clip. Both teams hit well, and MU combined for a .441 percentage. A slow start in the second frame saw Marquette trail 6-1 early. After a timeout the Golden Eagles used a 10-3 run and led 11-9 after a kill from Ellie Koontz. MU withstood a late press from the Flyers and took the set, 25-19. Barber and Werch had 11 and 10 kills, respectively through two. The third set was tied 11 times and had four lead changes before a final kill from Barber secured the win and the sweep.
A-10 Player of the Year Jamie Peterson was held to 11 kills as she led Dayton (22-9), while Alli Papesh added 10 kills.
Marquette will face the winner of No. 16 seed Purdue and Wright State on Saturday, Dec. 7 at 6 p.m. CT.
