Allie Barber needs just 13 kills to become MU's all-time kills leader
MILWAUKEE—The Marquette University volleyball team won its seventh consecutive match and fourth straight sweep on Friday night in a 3-0 (25-23, 25-18, 25-17) decision over DePaul.
Senior Allie Barber connected on 11 kills to hit .375, while junior Hope Werch added nine kills and hit at a .438 clip to lead Marquette (22-3, 12-1) offensively. Setters Lauren Speckman and Sarah Rose dished out 18 and 13 assists, respectively, while Rose collected seven digs. Speckman and junior Martha Konovodoff each totaled six digs.
DePaul (11-14, 3-10) put the pressure on the Golden Eagles and ended the night out-hitting MU, .301 to .256. The Golden Eagles were helped by stellar serving as the squad served a season-high 15 service aces, including six from Werch. Marquette also totaled nine team blocks with five from senior Gwyn Jones and four from junior Elizabeth Orf.
The Blue Demons held a lead over Marquette in the first set and played a back-and-forth contest before MU could pull away and earn the win despite a .533 hitting percentage from DePaul. In each set of the evening the score was tied multiple times with multiple lead changes.
Brittany Maxwell led DePaul with 13 kills as Donna Brown hit .429.
Barber has moved into second place on the Golden Eagles' all-time kills chart with 1,721 career kills. She is just 13 kills away from breaking the all-time record.
The Golden Eagles are now tied with Creighton for the top spot in the BIG EAST standings with five matches remaining in the regular season schedule after Creighton dropped its first league match to Villanova on Friday night.
Marquette heads down to Chicago to take on DePaul to conclude the weekend of home-and-home contests. First serve at McGrath-Phillips Arena is at 6 p.m. CT.
