The Marquette University men's basketball team (19-3, 8-1 BIG EAST) opens a two-game homestand Tuesday night when the squad welcomes St. John's (16-6, 4-5 BIG EAST) to Fiserv Forum for Al's Night at 7 p.m. CT. FS1 will feature the television broadcast, with Justin Kutcher (play-by-play) and Bill Raftery (analyst) calling the action. Following Tuesday's action, the Golden Eagles will host Villanova on Saturday, Feb. 9 for National Marquette Day.
Al's Night Continues Series With St. John's
The all-time series (Marquette leads 20-13) began in 1959-60 and prior to the clinching of the BIG EAST title on the last day of the regular season in 2012-13 with a win, the series' top highlight was a 65-53 Marquette victory in the championship game of the 1970 National Invitation Tournament.
MU claimed the title under the direction of legendary head coach Al McGuire, who played for three seasons at St. John's (1948-51). In his first season with the Redmen, he finished third in scoring with an 8.1 points per game average.
The next season, St. John's finished with a 24-5 record as McGuire averaged 7.7 points a game. He finished his collegiate career in 1951, averaging 8.5 points per game and helping lead his team to third-place finishes in both the NIT and NCAA. The team concluded the 1951 season with a 26-5 record.
McGuire's coaching career at Marquette included the 1977 national title, nine NCAA tournament appearances and a 295-80 overall record.
The Red Storm claimed the first meeting this season, posting an 89-69 win on New Year's Day in the league opener for both programs. Freshman forward Joey Hauser led four players in double figures with 15 points, but MU shot just 41.9 percent from the floor in the loss.
BIG EAST Win Streak Longest Since 2008-09
Marquette's latest rise in the rankings comes courtesy of a eight-game winning streak in BIG EAST Play, which the squad hasn't run together since winning nine-in-a-row to open conference play in 2008-09.
During the current run, which dates back to the Jan. 1 loss at St. John's, the Golden Eagles have been excelling at both ends of the court.
• Markus Howard is averaging 26.9 points per game during the eight-game run, while Sam Hauser has chipped in 17.8 points per contest and leads the team in rebounding (6.9 rpg.)
• The winning streak includes four BIG EAST road games, including the program's first victory at Butler since 1990
• Marquette's defense has held opposing offenses to just 41.3 percent shooting from the floor overall and 34.5 percent from behind the 3-point line.
• As a team, MU has knocked down 82.0 percent of its free throws and has made nearly as many charity tosses as its opponents have attempted.
