Marquette opens a spring break week of play in Arizona with its second spring event
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Top 10 finishes from Oliver Farrell (5-under-par, T3) and Hunter Eichhorn (3-under-par, T6) led Marquette to a third place finish at the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate, hosted by Michigan at the Outlaw Course.
The Golden Eagles (293-289-289—871) finished the tournament with back-to-back 1-over-par rounds and jumped two spots in the final round to finish third in their second event of the spring. Mississippi State (8-under-par 856) was the event winner.
Farrell (67-71-73—211) made par on 15 of his 18 holes on Sunday to post a third-place finish, while Eichhorn shot his third straight 71 (213) in a round that featured three birdie makes. Farrell (No. 79) and Eichhorn (No. 65) entered the week ranked in the nation's top 100, according to Golfstat.
Mississippi State's Garrett Johnson was the medalist with a 9-under-par 207.
Marquette's four counting scorers in the final round carded scores between 71 and 73, as the 289 was the third-lowest total in the 12-team field on Sunday. The Golden Eagles finished the tournament fourth among Desert Mountain Intercollegiate teams with 50 birdies and fifth with 156 pars.
Matthew Bachmann, playing as an individual, shot a final round 70 to finish tied for 22nd with a 222 (76-76-70). He made four birdies in his 2-under-par round on Sunday.
Sunday's average score was 75.78 in the 68-player field, nearly a stroke higher than the three-round average.
