MOON TOWNSHIP, Pennsylvania – Tanner Thomson posted six points as the Marquette University men's lacrosse team tied a program record for goals in a 17-15 victory over Robert Morris at Joe Walton Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.
Thomson scored four goals and added a pair of assists for the Golden Eagles (3-3) who snapped a three-game losing streak with their third triumph all-time against the Colonials.
MU also received four scores from Andrew Romagnoli, while John Wagner posted five goals on two goals and three assists. Defensive midfielders Luke Anderson and Noah Richard each scored a goal and added an assist and freshman Logan Kreinz added a transition marker himself.
Trailing 7-4 after the first quarter, the Golden Eagles scored eight of nine goals in the second to take a 11-8 lead into the half. Marquette was able to out-shoot RMU, 13-5, in the frame and won six of nine at the face-off dot, where Jared Hershman and freshman Jack Devine split duties.
MU tallied the first three goals of the second before Tyson Gibson's fourth of the day to put the Colonials back up two, 8-6, with 9:42 remaining. MU would go on to score the final five goals of the half, tying the game 8-8 on Logan Kreinz's transition goal and taking its first lead of the game, 9-8, on a McClelland goal with 7:14 left in the half.
The Colonials scored the first three goals of the third quarter to tie the score, 11-11, and sat knotted at 12 prior to a five-goal run that put MU in front for good. Thomson scored three of his goals over that 5-0 run that spanned into the fourth quarter.
Devine stepped up at the face-off dot for the Golden Eagles by winning 10-of-22 on the day. The freshman was recruited as an offensive midfielder and started practicing with the face-off specialists in the last month.
The Golden Eagles fly into Chicago this evening and plan to attend the BIG EAST Conference Women's Basketball Championship to cheer on top-seeded Marquette against DePaul.
Next up for Marquette is the University of Michigan on Saturday, March 16 at noon Central time. The game will air live from Valley Fields on GoMarquette.com/watch.
