Three Golden Eagles scored two goals each
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Marquette University women's lacrosse team dropped its final contest of its seven-game road swing at Central Michigan, 16-7, on Thursday afternoon.
Three Golden Eagles scored two goals each, including Grace Gabriel, Caroline Steller and Lindsey Willcocks. Madison Kane also rounded out scoring with a goal of her own coming just 18 seconds into the second half.
Marquette (6-5, 0-0 BIG EAST) fell behind 2-0 just over 6 minutes into play at CMU Lacrosse Complex. Steller made it 3-2 just halfway through the first, but the Chippewas rattled off five straight heading into the break for an 8-2 advantage that they'd never lose.
Willcocks' goals came back-to-back in the second half to provide a spark for Marquette, but were not enough, as the Chippewas responded to each.
Central Michigan (3-5, 0-0 SoCon) went on to end the game with four straight goals as CMU's Anna Schoonover tallied a career-high seven goals to lead the team.
Marquette owned the shot advantage 38-29 and collected 28 ground balls to Central Michigan's 24. Gabriel controlled 10 of the Golden Eagles' 11 draws, but the Chippewas owned the edge with 14.
MU goalkeeper Jules Horning made a season-high 10 saves in the net while CMU's Hope Murray had a career day with 17 saves and a 70.8 save percentage.
The Golden Eagles closed its longest road swing of the season 4-3 and return to action on Saturday, March 23 at 7 p.m. Central time when they host No. 11 Northwestern.
