MU led 5-4 early in the third quarter before a 8-0 run by the Irish
NOTRE DAME, Indiana – The Marquette University men's lacrosse team fell, 13-6, to No. 12/10 Notre Dame on a rainy Wednesday afternoon at Arlotta Stadium.
The Golden Eagles (6-5) led 5-4 early in the third quarter on Tanner Thomson's second goal, but an eight-goal run by the Irish handed Notre Dame its eighth win in the all-time series.
Thomson and Bob Pelton each scored twice for Marquette, which led three times before the second half spurt by ND. Andrew Romagnoli also scored in the first half and Peter Henkhaus added a late fourth quarter score.
Bryan Costabile posted a game-high four goals for the Irish (6-4), which outshot MU, 41-38, and claimed 16-of-23 face-offs.
Pelton scored MU's first goal of the day to tie the game at 1-1 and Thomson put the Golden Eagles ahead 2-1 with 9:25 remaining in the first.
Marquette was able to force the Irish into two failed clears in the first quarter and gained the ball on a shot with John Hulsman out of the cage in a 10-man ride. The Irish were able to capitalize on Hulsman's absence late in the second quarter to take a 3-2 lead on a Costabile strike from midfield.
Pelton closed out the first half with his second at the 2:33 mark of the second quarter and the two squads entered the break all square, 4-4.
Following Thomson's second score with 13:04 remaining in the third, the Irish took control outscoring MU, 9-1, over the remaining 28:04. MU was held scoreless for the next 25 minutes until the Henkhaus strike.
The win was the 300th in the career of Notre Dame head coach Kevin Corrigan.
The Golden Eagles resume BIG EAST Conference action on Saturday, April 13 at Providence in an 11 a.m. Central time contest at Anderson Stadium.
