PC bookended the game with five-goal runs
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – John Wagner became the second player in Marquette history with 70 career goals and 100 points in a 14-8 loss to Providence College on Saturday afternoon at Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium in Providence.
Wagner and Ryan Fazio each posted two goals in the loss for the Golden Eagles (6-6, 2-2 BIG EAST), who were out-shot 36-33 by the Friars (6-6, 2-1 BIG EAST).
Matt Grillo posted a career-high five goals for PC, while Brendan Kearns had a hat trick.
Providence scored the first five goals of the day before a Fazio score with just 18 seconds remaining in the first quarter. That score came on a feed from Jack Devine after his first face-off try of the afternoon.
The Fazio score was the first in a 5-2 run for the Golden Eagles, who pulled within two, 7-5, on a Jack Zerrillo score with under five minutes remaining before the opening half.
MU would pull within a pair on two more occasions and trailed, 10-8, after Connor McClelland's lone goal to start the fourth quarter.
Providence scored the final five goals following the McClelland score to claim its second victory in the all-time series.
Wagner's score at the 10:05 mark of the second quarter was the 70th of his career and marked his 100th career point. He sits third in program lore in both points (101) and goals (71). Ryan McNamara is MU's career leader in both goals (102) and points (152).
Marquette is 5-2 all-time against PC, including a 2-2 mark in Providence. MU's last game at Anderson Stadium was a 10-9 victory over PC in the title matchup of the 2017 BIG EAST Tournament.
The Golden Eagles return to action on Holy Saturday against No. 6 Duke at 10 a.m. Central time in Bethpage, New York.
