The Golden Eagles competed at three events on Thursday in California
MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University men's and women's track and field teams competed in three different meets on Thursday in California, including decathletes Joe Keys and William Eggers at the Bryan Clay Invitational at Azusa Pacific.
"It was a pretty good Thursday out here with Joe Keys and Will Eggers becoming just the second and third players in MU history to reach 7,000 points in the decathlon. That's close to Matt Piekarski's school record so it's a pretty good benchmark for us. Mike Nelson also had some people in the 10k at Mt. SAC and most of the rest of the crew at is at Cal State LA. Overall, it's going great and I'm really proud of how we're competing. We're looking forward to getting it rolling again on Friday at the Bryan Clay Invitational."
Keys, who owns set the Marquette heptathlon record during the indoor season, set nine new personal bests on his way to a fifth-place finish in the decathlon with 7,138 points. That total sits 98 behind Piekarski's program-best of 7,236, set at the 2006 BIG EAST Championships on his way to a conference crown. Eggers placed two spots behind Keys with 7,019 points.
Keys owns the MU freshman record in the event of 6,466, which he set at the same meet last season.
Junior distance runner Daniel Pederson also competed in the men's 5,00-meter run at Azusa Pacific and placed fifth in his heat in a time of 14:29.40, a mark that is No. 7 all-time at Marquette.
MU's other distance runners took part in the 10k at the Mt. SAC Relays, where Caitlin McGauley notched a near 2-minute personal best (36:32.42) and Jon Klaiber (30:36.11) and Ryan Burd placed fifth and seventh, respectively. in the men's event.
Over on the Jesse Owens Track at Cal State Los Angeles, Mary Hanson (2:14.38) and Bradley Eagan (1:52.43) paced a MU sweep in the women's and men's 800-meter run. Breanne Marchan also took third at the CSULA Twilight in the women's 100-meter dash in a time of 11.94 second, which places her fifth in the Marquette record books.
