MILWAUKEE - Senior Connor Alba and junior Sam Thornton tallied goals for Marquette in a 2-1 victory over the Milwaukee Torrent on Sunday afternoon at Valley Fields. The match was MU's final tune-up before kicking off regular season play next week.
Â
Connor Alba scored the first goal for the Golden Eagles in the 19th minute off a cross into the box from Patrick Seagrist. The goal was Alba's second in as many games as he netted the game-winner against Notre Dame on Wednesday evening. Â
Â
Jackson Weyman, who played the second half in Wednesday's exhibition against the Irish, played all 45 minutes in goal during the first half and saved the only shot he faced.
MU held a 1-0 lead at the break, but the Milwaukee Torrent scored the equalizer in the 47th minute off a free kick from forward Lucca Lemos. The match was tied for most of the second half until Sam Thornton chased down a loose ball and put the game winning goal in the back of the net in the 89th minute. A transfer from Gannon University (Pa.), the goal was Thornton's first as a Golden Eagle.Â
Seven of MU's 13 shots came on goal and it outshot the Torrent 13-12 on the afternoon. Torrent keeper Kevin Tenjo played all 90 minutes in net and saved a game-high five shots. The game was marked by physicality from start to finish with 41 total fouls being called on the two teams.
Â
MU will begin regular season play on Friday, Aug. 30 at Valley Fields against UAB. The start time is set for 7:05 p.m. Coach Bennett's squad plays UC Davis in another home tilt on Sunday, Sept. 1 at noon.
