WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
UAB (6-9-3, 2-5-1 Conference USA in 2018)
The UAB Blazers, led by first-year head coach Jeff Kinney, are coming off a season that saw them go 6-9-3 (2-5-1 C-USA). 2018 was a season marked by overtime matches, as six of UAB's 18 games (33.3%) went to extra time. The Blazers went just 1-3-2 in those games.
UAB returns 17 players from last year's team, including six seniors and 2018 Conference USA All-Freshman Team honoree Blake White. Losing five of their top seven scorers, Kinney brought in 15 newcomers this season, including seven transfers and eight freshmen. The Blazers return 12 of their 22 (54.5%) goals from last season.
Kinney, who helped lead Va. Tech to three-straight NCAA tournament appearances as an assistant coach, will look to get UAB back to the postseason for the first time since 2014.
SERIES HISTORY:
Marquette and UAB will be meeting for the 20th time in the history of the two programs on Friday evening. The Blazers currently lead the series 10-9-0, winning the past two matchups. MU and UAB haven't played since 2004, however, and the Golden Eagles last win in the series came in 2002 in a 2-1 overtime victory at Valley Fields.
OPPONENT FORM:
UC Davis (11-4-5, 3-3-1 Big West)
Entering his 23rd season as the head coach at UC Davis, Dwayne Shaffer has had an extended run of consistent success with the Aggies. Since leading the transition of UCD to Divison I in 2007, Shaffer has helped his team earn three NCAA tournament bids, including two in their first couple years in the Big West.
Last season, UC Davis won 11 games for the second time in as many seasons. Like Marquette, UCD made it to the conference tournament championship game. They fell in a shootout, missing the NCAA tournament by just one game.
This season, the Aggies return eight of their top 10 scorers and 25 of their 27 (92.5%) goals. Senior Adam Mickelson lead the team with 14 points (four goals, six assists), while fellow senior Dylan Wood and sophomores Robert Mejia and Andy Velasquez scored three goals each in 2018.
SERIES HISTORY:
Marquette and UC Davis have never previously met.
KEY POINTS:
MU PICKED FOURTH, SEAGRIST AND PRPA EARN PRESEASON HONORS: Marquette's fourth-place selection by the coaches was bolstered by a pair of Golden Eagles on the preseason All-BIG EAST team, senior midfielder Luka Prpa and senior defender Patrick Seagrist. A Wind Lake, Wisconsin native, Prpa was an All-BIG EAST First Team selection in 2018, earning all-league accolades for the third time. He scored six goals and six assists for 18 points. Seagrist, who hails from Streamwood, Illinois, was also an All-BIG EAST First Team honoree in 2018 and was BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week four times last season.
GOLDEN EAGLES GO UNBEATEN IN EXHIBITION PLAY: After battling to a 0-0 draw in the exhibition opener against Loyola Chicago, MU posted 2-1 victories in home games against No. 9 Notre Dame and the Milwaukee Torrent, a local semi-pro team. Senior forward Connor Alba scored goals in each of the final two friendlies while newcomers Christian Marquez and Sam Thornton netted one apiece. In the three games, the Golden Eagles outshot their opposition 47-27.
TRANSFERS HOPE TO MAKE AN IMPACT: The Golden Eagles added three new transfers in the offseason to bolster a strong group of returners in 2019.
MU BOASTS INTERNATIONAL FLAVOR: This year's roster features players from England (2), Germany (2), Italy (2) and Sweden (1), as well as seven different states. Head coach Louis Bennett has shown he can bring players from all around the world to MU.
