The Golden Eagles travel to Wisconsin for their next match on Thursday evening
MUNCIE, Indiana – The Marquette University women's soccer team out-shot Ball State, 11-6, on Sunday afternoon in a 1-0 loss at the Briner Sports Complex in Muncie, Indiana.
Senior forward Sam Kambol scored in the 72nd minute as the Cardinals (2-0) pushed their unbeaten streak to 13 matches and improved to 39-5 at home over the last five campaigns.
Maddy Henry, who became MU's all-time saves leader on Thursday at Colorado State, notched a pair on the day, but could not stop Kambol's shot as she came out to play a deep ball from BSU defender Yela Ziswiler.
Henry, Bri Jaeger, Emily Hess and midfielder Maddie Monticello all played the full 90 minutes for the Golden Eagles (0-2), while sophomore Katrina Wetherell fired two shots in 60 minutes off the bench.
The two squads were scoreless through the first 45 minutes and the Golden Eagles held a 7-3 edge in shots. Freshman midfielder Alex Campana had the game's first two shots for the Golden Eagles, including and early strike in the first minute of play before BSU's Shelby Kean left the pitch with an injury in the second minute.
Marquette's best look in the first stanza came in the 35th minute off the boot of redshirt sophomore Rachel Johnson at the right upper 90 by the near post. BSU keeper Tristin Stuteville got her hands on the shot for her second save of the match.
Campana and Johnson made their first career starts in the midfield where they were joined by Natalie Yass and Maddie Monticello. The pair replaced Katrina Wetherell and Josie Kelderman who started the season opener at CSU.
The Golden Eagles head to longtime rival Wisconsin on Thursday, Aug. 29 for a 7 p.m. matchup at the McClimon Soccer Complex in Madison. MU then opens its home slate on Sunday, Sept. 1 at 2:30 p.m. Central Time at Valley Fields against the University of Michigan.
