MADISON, Wisconsin – The Marquette University women's soccer team held No. 15 Wisconsin scoreless through regulation before UW's Lauren Rice posted the match winner in the 93rd minute on Thursday evening at the McClimon Soccer Complex.
Junior forward Kylie Sprecher had a great opportunity to start the extra period but had MU's lone shot of the game denied in the box. The Badgers were able to win a corner off the counter before Rice chipped the golden goal over MU keeper Maddy Henry from the top of the 18.
The Golden Eagles (0-3) pushed the game to overtime against the Badgers (2-1) for the first time since 2010 but were out-shot 18-1 overall. Henry posted five saves in the loss and recorded her 300th career stop in the 78th minute, making her the first MU keeper to ever reach the mark.
It took until the 20th minute for the game's first shot, a Dani Rhodes' strike that resulted in Henry's first save. The Badgers held a 7-0 edge in shots in a scoreless first half, with Rhodes accounting for three of those attempts. UW also had the frame's two corner kicks.
Rhodes' former Waukesha West teammate Natalie Yass started at forward for the Golden Eagles and played 83 minutes.
It is the second year in a row that the Badgers and Golden Eagles have met in the regular season. Prior to last year they had not met during regular season action since the 2004 campaign.
MU is winless in its last four meetings against UW, though it did advance to the NCAA Sweet 16 on penalty kicks in 2010. The Golden Eagles are 2-4 all-time in Madison and 5-9-2 overall against the Badgers.
Marquette opens its home slate on Sunday, Sept. 1 at 2:30 p.m. Central Time at Valley Fields against the University of Michigan.
