MU tallied six shots on goal, including two in overtime, but failed to break through
MILWAUKEE – For the second time in three days, the Marquette University men's soccer team had a match go to double overtime. After a thrilling 2-1 victory over UAB on Friday evening, Sunday afternoon's match against UC Davis resulted in a 0-0 draw.
"Let's not take anything from them (UC Davis), that was a good team we played today," Bennett said. "They've won 11 games in each of the past two seasons. While I'm not ecstatically happy about the draw, I'm not disastrously upset either."
The Aggies slightly outshot the Golden Eagles, 15-13, but MU had six shots on net compared to just one for the opposition.
In the first half, UC Davis had scoring chances and seemed to have control of the match, yet both the Golden Eagles and Aggies remained scoreless after the first half.
MU had numerous chances to break the scoreless tie in the second half and overtime periods but couldn't break through.
"I think we had the two best chances of the night," Bennett said. "We had header attempts from Patrick (Seagrist) and Sam (Thornton) that just missed that could have put the game away. I thought we created some great chances in the second half, especially."
One of the Golden Eagles' best chances of the match came in the 100th minute (overtime) when Sam Thornton's attempted header off a beautiful cross from Gabe Kash was deflected over the net by UC Davis keeper Wallis Lapsley.
Lapsey recorded six saves on the afternoon while MU's Jackson Weyman saved the only shot on goal he faced.
"We're a work in progress," Bennett said. "I'm content with the clean sheet today and the way we defended them. I'm excited to move forward and continue to develop this team."
The Golden Eagles and Aggies move to 1-0-1 on the season with the draw.
